The O6 Partners with Colleton County Schools & USC Salkehatchie in "All For Colleton" Back-To-School Bash

One of the greatest aspects of small-town living is knowing that we have each other’s backs. We look out for one another. We celebrate each other, and when we fall, we help lift each other up. Being there for one another is the premise behind “All For Colleton,” a community wide celebration slated for Saturday, August 5th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Colleton County High School campus.

All For Colleton will feature hands-on STEM activities, a story corner, music, giveaways, back-to-school supplies, health and wellness initiatives and a free hot dog lunch while supplies last!

“We are looking forward to celebrating our students and their accomplishments, said Dr. Vallerie Cave, Colleton County School District Superintendent.   “The School District has held a back-to school bash for more than a decade, but this year, in addition to offering school supplies, we are teaming up with the Original Six Foundation and the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie to offer students and their families more hands-on activities and giveaways as well as showcase work from our talented students.”

Many local and state-wide organizations will host activities to engage the community during All For Colleton. Boeing’s STEM-based DreamLearners program will offer students the chance to build and fly paper-airplanes, USC Salkehatchie is hosting multiple activities including a virtual reality(VR) experience, chemistry experiments and drones, student’s in Colleton County’s award winning robotics program will display their work and the Original Six Foundation is hosting a reading corner, where young readers can listen to a book that will be read to them and they will be able pick a book to take home with them to keep.

The Original Six Foundation currently partners with several Colleton County Schools through its O6 Afterschool and My First Library programs.

“The Original Six Foundation believes every child in every school in South Carolina deserves access to the same educational opportunities. But in many rural and underserved communities, barriers exist that create limitations for our most vulnerable students,” Original Six Foundation executive director, Kara Gormley Meador says. “The Original Six Foundation seeks to help address those disparities through literacy initiatives, teacher-informed programming, and a life-changing focus on early learners.”

“We are excited to work together with the Original Six Foundation and Dr. Cave and the Colleton County School District to foster a sense of community and develop a strong pathway from Pre-K through high school and post-secondary education,” says USC Salkehatchie Dean, Dr. April Cone. “Creating that pathway and fostering academic growth is crucial to developing talent and economic success in Colleton County,” Cone said.

All For Colleton is free and open to the public. If you are interested in learning more about the event or would like to serve as an event sponsor, contact kara at info@originalsixfoundation.org.
